This Is Fine: With This Innovative Climate Technology It Might Just Be
Hello!
The world is quite literally on fire - a grim reminder of how dire and how immediate climate change and global heating are, right now. Not in the distant future – now.
On August 6th IPCC has released a landmark report on climate change that paints a terrifying picture of where we are now and where we are headed. And no, it’s not fine.
The scientific journal Nature reported on the findings of the IPCC report and one of their key takeaway messages was that it IS still possible to stop global heating before reaching the 1.5 C tipping point. To do this we need to make massive changes on a global scale. And for that, we need technology and innovation.
That’s why today we’re shifting our focus from waste to the technology that is pushing us towards a better, less firey, future:
ORCA: Carbon Capture Technology at Scale
Climeworks and CarbFix, two leading carbon capture technologies are working together to create Orca in Iceland, one of the biggest carbon capture sites in the world. Their innovative technology will take carbon directly out of the air and then sequester it deep underground where a series of chemical reactions will turn it to stone – locking it away permanently and safely. Orca will be live on September 8th and be able to capture 4000 tons of CO₂ per year. This makes it the biggest carbon-negative venture to date!
The best part about this is that it allows us to remove carbon that is already in the atmosphere - stopping new emissions is not enough and removing historic emissions is key at this stage!
Made of Air: Carbon Negative Materials
Made of Air has developed award-winning technologies that allow them to make carbon-negative plastics. They have partnered with Audi and H&M, scaling up the production of carbon-negative materials for everyday uses. They even generate their own green power with heat from the manufacturing process. Made of Air is a great example of how technology can be used to meet our needs and reduce CO2 in the atmosphere at the same time. More of this, please!
CarbiCrete: Concrete Made from Captured Carbon Emissions
CarbiCrete makes concrete using carbon captured from industrial emissions. Their technology abates CO2 emissions AND offers a safe alternative to concrete. The concrete industry is responsible for 8% of global CO2 emissions better technology is hugely needed here!
These types of innovations aim not only to stop new emissions but also to capture old ones.
As consumers, we hold a lot of power in the choices we make and the lifestyle we choose to live. Reducing our individual climate impact starts at home. Together, we can make a difference!
